Chapter Four

Cashing Margo’s check was the best thing to happen to me all month. Over two hundred bucks for just a few hours of work. Hard work, but I’d never minded working hard as long as it paid off somehow. I needed to find a new bank and move my savings over somewhere local. But that would mean I planned on staying longer. I still hadn’t decided yet.

I poked through the fridge and pulled out some ground beef and other fixings for tacos. Just as I was about to turn on the stove, something flickered in the corner of my eye. I stilled and turned.

Only to see Hannigan staring back at me with a shocked expression.

“No.” Fear trickled down my spine. “No.”

“What–what am I doing here?” Hannigan patted himself on the chest and face. “How.” His throat worked. “How is this possible?”

Telling him would give him too much information. I slapped on a shocked look. “You can’t be here! You have to go back!”

Hannigan’s eyes widened. His form flickered a few times before it solidified. “I can’t.”

“Try again!” But I knew it was useless. This had happened to me once before, but I was able to easily banish the woman. Hannigan would be a little tougher. He was stuck here for reasons unknown, though they were likely tied to his untimely death. I was alot of things, but I was no investigator. Wading into a murder seemed to be the height of foolhardy. “I–I’m sorry. I seem to be stuck here.” Hannigan floated above the kitchen tile, a miserable expression on his handsome face.

I chopped aggressively at the ground beef sizzling in the pan, trying to think of a way to banish him. The one foolproof way I knew wasn’t working. I shut my eyes for a brief second and tried again to find his door. The same black presence loomed in front of me.

I sighed. “We will figure it out.” This was probably a lie, but hope was the only thing I had these days.

“A change of pace is nice,” Hannigan admitted, looking around at my small digs.

I waved the wooden spoon at him. “Don’t get used to it,” I muttered.

He floated to the floor. “Where are we?”

“Same town. Different place.” I added seasonings to the taco mix, though I lamented my lack of cumin. I had a small bottle of taco sauce I’d picked up at the store, though I usually liked to add that last. It would have to do. “Can you materialize fully?” I asked as I opened a pack of iceberg lettuce.

Hannigan’s brows drew together. “I’m not sure.”

“Give it a try. I could use a hand with the chopping.”

Hannigan’s mouth turned down. He sighed and flickered.

“Concentrate. You’re in a safe place. No one will be able to see you but me.”

“And why is that exactly?” he asked as he concentrated. His form flickered,
